About Fujian Province and Fuzhou
Fujian福建(meaning “Happy Establishment”), on the south-eastern coast of China, is bordered by the provinces of Zhejiang to the north, Jiangxi to the west, and Guangdong to the southwest. Facing Taiwan across the Straits, Fujian is one of the closest mainland provinces to Southeast Asia and Oceania, as well as an important window and base of China for global exchanges. Its capital and largest city is Fuzhou 福州 (“Happy City”), the city in which Fuzhou University is mainly based. With a long tradition as a coastal port and shipbuilding centre, Fuzhou is the major coastal city between Hong Kong and Shanghai. As the central city of a province with many ethnic and linguistic links to Taiwan, Fuzhou has benefited from cross-strait investment and is one of the 200 most attractive cities in the world and the eco-city in China with the highest investment value. Jasmine is the city flower and the banyan is the official city tree. Fuzhou, with its marvellous green cityscape that is full of parks and gardens, is also known as the “City of Banyans” 榕城 due to the numerous banyan trees that have been planted there since the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Fuzhou, the only city in China with a name that has the Chinese character “Fu” 福, which means blessings, boasts rich Fu culture. It is a gem for explorers, cultural enthusiasts and foodies. We expect to meet you in Fuzhou.
